TR1900 dry screw vacuum pump at a Shanghai titanium dioxide plant

In August 2022, a titanium dioxide plant in Shanghai installed one TR1900 dry screw vacuum pump on its disc-filter dewatering line. The selection had to suit the required rough-vacuum duty while accounting for acid-containing liquid, fine-particle carryover, and the customer's power-consumption target.

Project background

In August 2022, the customer described Shanghai as increasing oversight of traditional high-energy industries. At this titanium dioxide plant, reducing the energy use of major production equipment had become an urgent priority. The water ring vacuum system was one of the line's larger power loads. After SC Air Power Tech contacted the plant, the team was open to reviewing a dry screw vacuum system.

Vacuum duty at the disc filter

The titanium dioxide production material was milled into fine particles, reacted with sulfuric acid and other process liquids, and then fed continuously to the disc filter for water washing.

The TR1900 maintained rough vacuum across the filter so liquid could pass through the filter media during dewatering. For this line, the confirmed operating point was 60,000 Pa(a) with a required volumetric flow rate of 122 m3/min. The vacuum had to remain stable through loading and normal filter operation.

Conditions reviewed at the pump inlet

Acid-containing carryover

The material had already reacted with sulfuric acid before reaching the disc filter. Even after water washing, acid-containing liquid could still be carried toward the vacuum package.

Fine-particle carryover

Fine particles could travel with the carried liquid. An upstream gas-liquid separator and inlet filter reduced the liquid and solids reaching the pump chamber.

Gas-contact material

For this project, the parts exposed to the working gas used SS316. The material was selected for the confirmed process condition.

Customer-confirmed result

Since installation in August 2022, the customer has reported no major repair on the TR1900. For this disc-filter line, the customer also reported power consumption at approximately half that of the previous water ring vacuum pump system.

The plant did not release detailed production data. For a similar line, start with the working pressure and required volumetric flow rate, then check the process medium, carryover, solids, and protection arrangement against the actual duty.
